Travel Business Through the Ages — From Sumerians to Silicon Valley
By Tourism369 · Tourism Concepts · UGC NET Paper 2 Unit I
Travel is as old as humanity. But the business of travel — packaging, selling, and managing journeys for others — has a fascinating 4,000-year history that begins with Babylonian merchants and ends with AI-powered travel apps. Here is the complete story.
400 BC – 5th Century AD
🏛️ The Empire Era
Sumerians (Babylonians) were among the earliest travel businesspeople — credited as the founders of travel trade. Trade developed around 400 BC. Egyptians introduced the first cruises and conducted the first recorded “tourism journey” — Queen Hatshepsut’s voyage to Punt in 1480 BC. The Romans built a vast road network (150 BC), making travel safe and accessible. The Olympic Games (776 BC) drew the world’s first event tourists. Five factors made Empire Era travel possible: affluent population, safe roads, accepted currency, common language, and legal protection of travellers.
5th – 16th Century
⚔️ The Middle Ages & Renaissance Era
After the fall of Rome, travel became dangerous and erratic. The feudal system restricted movement. Pilgrimage travel re-emerged in the Middle Ages — organised around holy sites. Marco Polo’s historic journey took place in the 13th century. The first passport was born in 1388. The rise of tour guides came about in the 14th century. The Renaissance (14th–16th centuries) revived trade and commerce, reopening travel routes and stimulating interest in exploration, art, and culture.
1613 – 1785
🎩 The Grand Tour Era
The Grand Tour — a tradition of wealthy young European men travelling through Europe for education and cultural enrichment — shaped the concept of organised tourism. It was considered a status symbol. Grand Tours began in England and ended in Holland, using the most advanced transport technologies. The Cicerone (knowledgeable guide or tutor) accompanied travellers. Grand Tours could last from months to years. This era spawned the first travel intermediaries — people who arranged carriages, lodging, and itineraries for wealthy travellers.
1800 – 1944
🚂 The Mobility Era
Railways, steamships, and automobiles transformed travel from an elite privilege to a mass activity. Thomas Cook’s 1841 group excursion (570 passengers, Leicester to Loughborough) launched organised tourism. In 1845, he ran the first commercial package tour. In 1856, the first continental circular tour. Traveller’s cheques (1874) revolutionised travel finance. By 1880, Cook had offices in Bombay and Calcutta. In 1864, Winter Tourism was born in St. Moritz. The first Butlin’s Holiday Camp opened in 1936. Holidays with Pay Act was passed in 1938.
1944 – Present
✈️ The Modern Era
Post-World War II: paid vacations, middle-class car ownership, and jet aircraft democratised travel. The 1950s saw Club Méditerranée and all-inclusive resorts. Boeing 747 (1969) carried 500 passengers. Internet revolution in the late 1990s transformed how travel is researched and booked. Online travel agencies (Expedia, MakeMyTrip) emerged. Social media in the 2010s made travel aspirational. AI and personalisation are defining the 2020s.
