📅 Evolution of Indian Travel Trade
Pre-Independence Era (Pre-1947)
Travel in India was dominated by British companies — Thomas Cook, Cox & Kings. Indian travellers had limited organised travel options. Pilgrimages were the dominant form of domestic travel, managed by dharmashala trusts and temple committees rather than commercial agencies.
Post-Independence Growth (1947–1980)
After independence, India began building its own travel trade infrastructure. 1951: TAAI (Travel Agents Association of India) founded in Mumbai. 1961: Travel Corporation of India (TCI) established — became the trend-setter of the Indian travel industry. SITA World Travels, Thomas Cook India, Cox & Kings India, and American Express India emerged as the “Big 5” of Indian travel.
Liberalisation Era (1991–2000)
India’s 1991 economic liberalisation opened the travel market to private competition. Outbound tourism exploded. MakeMyTrip was founded in 2000 — beginning India’s online travel revolution. IATO (Indian Association of Tour Operators) grew into a major industry body.
Digital Revolution (2000–Present)
OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) transformed India’s travel trade. MakeMyTrip, Yatra, Cleartrip, Ixigo — all became household names. Traditional agencies reinvented themselves as experience curators and corporate travel specialists. India’s travel tech ecosystem became one of the most innovative in Asia.
