Types of Travel Agencies — Inbound, Outbound, Domestic, Online & More Explained

By Tourism369 · Travel Agency & Tour Operations · UGC NET Paper 2 Unit V

Not all travel agencies are the same. The agency sending Indian honeymooners to Bali and the agency receiving French tourists in Rajasthan are completely different businesses — different clients, different suppliers, different regulations, and different revenue models. Here is the complete classification.

📋 Classification by Direction of Travel
✈️ Outbound Travel Agency
Specialises in sending domestic tourists to foreign destinations. Services: international air tickets, foreign visas, foreign hotel bookings, international travel insurance, foreign exchange, international tour packages. Must be IATA-approved and RBI-authorised for forex. India examples: MakeMyTrip, Yatra, Thomas Cook India’s outbound division. Revenue: commissions from international airlines, hotels, and tour operators.
🌏 Inbound Travel Agency
Specialises in receiving foreign tourists into India. Also called Incoming Tour Operators or Ground Handlers. Services: airport transfers, hotel bookings, domestic transport, guides, sightseeing, cultural programmes. Must be recognised by Ministry of Tourism. Revenue: service fees from foreign tour operators + margins on services. India examples: SITA World Travels, Cox & Kings incoming division.
🗺️ Domestic Travel Agency
Specialises in organising tours within India for Indian tourists. Services: domestic air/rail/bus tickets, hotel bookings, pilgrimage tours, hill station packages, wildlife tours. Does not need IATA approval but should be Ministry of Tourism recognised. India examples: ADTOI members, state tourism development corporations. Massive market — 2.5 billion domestic tourist visits annually.
📋 Classification by Size & Scale
🏢 Multinational Travel Agency
Operates across multiple countries with international offices. Examples: Thomas Cook (pre-2019), American Express Travel, Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT). High brand recognition, vast supplier networks, corporate travel focus. Offer global crisis management and 24/7 worldwide support.
🏙️ National Travel Agency
Operates across multiple cities within one country. India examples: MakeMyTrip (HQ Delhi), Cleartrip, Ixigo. Wide product range, multi-destination expertise, professional staff. Serve both B2B and B2C markets.
🏪 Regional/Local Travel Agency
Operates in one city or region. Deep local knowledge, personal relationships with clients, specialised in local/regional destinations. Most of India’s 100,000+ travel agencies are in this category. Survive through niche expertise and personalised service.
📋 Classification by Technology Model
💻 Online Travel Agency (OTA)
Technology-driven platforms enabling online search, comparison, and booking. MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, Expedia, Airbnb, Goibibo, Cleartrip. 24/7 availability, price transparency, consumer reviews. India’s OTA market growing at 12-15% annually. Revenue: commissions + booking fees + display advertising.
🤝 Offline/Traditional Travel Agency
Brick-and-mortar agencies with physical premises. Personal consultation, complex itinerary expertise, corporate travel management. Surviving through specialisation, corporate contracts, and high-touch luxury travel. Revenue: commissions + service fees.
🔄 Hybrid Travel Agency
Combines online booking platform with physical offices. Customers can book online OR visit in person. Best of both worlds — technology efficiency + human expertise. India’s Thomas Cook India and Cox & Kings operated on this model.
📋 Classification by Specialisation
💍 Niche/Specialist Travel Agency
Specialises in one type of tourism: honeymoon packages, adventure travel, medical tourism, pilgrimage tours, luxury travel, MICE, cruise-only, student travel, senior travel. Command premium pricing and higher loyalty. Growing rapidly as travellers seek expertise over generalism.
