🏛️ What Is Hospitality?
The Oxford Dictionary defines hospitality as “the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers with liberality and goodwill.” The word derives from the Latin Hospitalitas — rooted in the same origin as “hospital” and “host.”
In India, hospitality is captured in the ancient Sanskrit phrase Atithi Devo Bhava — the guest is God. This philosophy shaped Indian hospitality for thousands of years before the concept of a “hotel” even existed. Temple priests accommodated pilgrims. Dharamshalas provided free shelter. Sarais offered rest along trade routes. Each was an expression of the same timeless principle: the stranger at your door deserves your best.

🏨 Types of Accommodation Units
🏨 Hotels
The most recognised form of commercial accommodation. Hotels offer rooms, food & beverage, and related services. Classified by stars (1–5 star), type (business, boutique, resort, heritage), and ownership (chain, independent, franchise). The word “hotel” originates from the French “hôtel garni” of the 18th century — apartments let by day, week or month.
🚗 Motels (Motor Hotels)
Emerged with the rise of automobile travel and highway networks. Located along highways, offering parking facilities adjacent to rooms. Designed for convenience — easy check-in, check-out and departure. Popular in North America. India’s highway development is creating motel demand on national highway corridors.
🌴 Resorts
Destination hotels offering comprehensive leisure experiences — pools, spas, sports, entertainment, dining. Usually located at scenic destinations: beaches, mountains, hill stations. Examples: Goa beach resorts, Shimla mountain resorts, Kerala backwater resorts. Target leisure tourists seeking immersive experiences.
🏠 Timeshare Apartments / Condominiums
Shared ownership of holiday property — multiple owners share usage rights for specific time periods annually. Popular in beach and hill destinations. Buyer purchases the right to use a unit for a specific week or weeks each year. Examples: Club Mahindra in India. Growing segment with increasing disposable incomes.
🏡 Homestays & Guesthouses
Family-run accommodation offering a personalised “home away from home” experience. Core of alternative and responsible tourism. Kerala’s homestay network is globally recognised. India’s government promotes homestays through rural tourism schemes — directly benefiting local families.
🎒 Youth Hostels & Budget Hotels
Affordable accommodation targeting students, backpackers, and budget travellers. Dormitory-style rooms with shared facilities. India’s youth hostel network (YHAI) operates across major tourist destinations. Growing backpacker market driving budget accommodation demand in India.
