History of Aviation — From Kites & Balloons to Supersonic Jets & Modern Air Travel
By Tourism369 · Aviation Industry, Ticketing & Frontier Formalities · UGC NET Paper 2 Unit IV
Until 100 years ago nobody could have imagined that travelling by air would become a daily phenomenon. From Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches to the Wright Brothers’ 12-second flight to 3.7 billion annual passengers — aviation is humanity’s greatest technological achievement.
🌤️ Early Aviation — Ancient Beginnings
The dream of flight is ancient. In the 5th century BC, kites were perhaps the first aircraft. In the 13th century, English monk Roger Bacon studied how air could support craft just as water supports boats. In the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci produced designs for an airscrew and parachute after studying bird flight — the first scientific suggestions for aircraft design, though impractical at the time.
📅 Complete Aviation History Timeline
5th C BC
Ancient
Kites — First Aircraft
Kites invented in China around 5th century BC — perhaps the earliest human-made flying objects. Used for signalling, measuring distances, and eventually carrying people.
16th C
Renaissance
Leonardo da Vinci — Airscrew & Parachute
Leonardo da Vinci produced designs for airscrew (propeller concept) and parachute after studying bird flight. First scientific approach to aviation design. His drawings, though impractical, were visionary.
1783
First Flight
Montgolfier Brothers — Hot Air Balloon
27 November 1783 — Montgolfier Brothers successfully achieved the first manned ascent in a hot air balloon at Annonay, France. First time humans flew. Opened the era of lighter-than-air aviation.
1903
Powered Flight
Wright Brothers — First Powered Flight
17 December 1903 — Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first successful powered, heavier-than-air flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Changed history forever.
1909
Commercial Era
Wright Company Founded
22 November 1909 — Wright Brothers established The Wright Company — the first commercial aviation company. Now consolidated as Curtiss-Wright Corporation.
1910
First Cargo
First Official Cargo Flight
7 November 1910, USA — First official cargo flight carried 200 pounds of silk using Wright Model B plane. Birth of air freight industry.
1924
Global
First Round-the-World Flight
6 April to 28 September 1924 — First round-the-world flight completed. Aviation era truly went global.
1925
Policy
Kelly Air Mail Act (USA)
US Congress passed Kelly Air Mail Act — enabled Post Office to contract with air transport operators. Created first commercial aviation market in the US.
WW1 & WW2
Military Transformation
Aviation Transformed by World Wars
WWI: Aircraft speed doubled to 130 mph with powerful propulsion engines. WWII: USA manufactured 50,000 planes a year. Aircraft now carried troops, cargo, bombs. After WWI and WWII, ex-military planes (B-29, Avro Lancaster, Douglas DC-3) converted to commercial use.
1932
India
Tata Airlines — First Indian Airline
J.R.D. Tata founded Tata Airlines in 1932 — the first airline in India. JRD Tata himself piloted the inaugural flight from Karachi to Mumbai. Tata Airlines was nationalized in 1953 and renamed Air India.
1953
Air India
Nationalization — Birth of Air India
Indian government nationalized Tata Airlines — renamed Air India. Became India’s national carrier. Air India became a symbol of India’s aviation ambition internationally.
1970s
Jumbo Jets
Wide-Body Aircraft Era
Introduction of wide-bodied jets (Boeing 747 — “Jumbo Jet”) made long-haul travel affordable for millions. Journeys to USA and Far East came within reach of the middle class.
Modern
Present
Low Cost Carriers & Digital Aviation
LCCs (IndiGo, SpiceJet, Ryanair, EasyJet) democratised air travel. GDS, e-ticketing, mobile boarding passes transformed passenger experience. Airbus A380 (world’s largest), Boeing 787 Dreamliner (most fuel-efficient) define modern aviation.
🇮🇳 History of Indian Aviation
Tata’s Contribution — Founding Indian Aviation
J.R.D. Tata (Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata) founded Tata Airlines on 15 October 1932. JRD himself piloted the inaugural airmail service from Karachi to Mumbai (then Bombay). Tata Airlines was the first airline in India and one of the earliest in Asia. The airline grew into a full-service carrier before being nationalized in 1953 as Air India. In 2022, Tata Group re-acquired Air India — completing the full circle.
Key Indian Aviation Milestones
1932: Tata Airlines founded — JRD Tata pilots inaugural flight Karachi-Mumbai
1953: Nationalization — Tata Airlines becomes Air India
1991: Economic liberalisation opens aviation to private players
1993: Air Deccan launched — first LCC in India
2006: IndiGo launched — now India’s #1 airline by market share
2022: Tata Group re-acquires Air India — completes historic circle
🚀 Modern Aviation Features
Wide-Body Aircraft: Boeing 747, Boeing 777, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A380 (world’s largest — 853 passengers), Airbus A350. Supersonic Transport: Concorde (1969-2003) cruised at Mach 2 (2,180 km/h) cutting London-New York to 3.5 hours. New supersonic aircraft planned by 2030. Business Jets: Gulfstream, Bombardier, Cessna Citation — private jet market growing rapidly in India’s corporate sector.
