Tourism Policy — What It Is, Why It Matters & How India’s Tourism Policy Works

By Tourism369 · Tourism Concepts · UGC NET Paper 2 Unit VIII

Tourism policy is the invisible hand that shapes every aspect of a destination — from visa rules to hotel star ratings to which forests become national parks. Without it, tourism is chaotic. With it, tourism becomes a strategic engine of national development.

📜 What Is Tourism Policy?

Tourism policy is a set of regulations, rules, guidelines, directives, and development/promotion objectives and strategies that provide a framework within which the collective and individual decisions directly affecting long-term tourism development and the daily activities within a destination are taken.

In simpler terms: tourism policy decides what kind of tourism happens, where it happens, for whom it benefits, and how it is managed. It operates at international, national, state, and local levels, and is developed by governments in consultation with industry stakeholders and communities.
